Figure 4.10Left: plot of estimates of cohort P/B and individual body mass for a
broad range of taxa. Cohort P/B was estimated as the natural logarithm of the ratio
of final mass to egg or hatchling mass. Body mass was estimated as the geometric
mean of the product of final mass and egg or hatchling mass. Data from Andersonet al.,
1998 ;Benke&Wallace, 1980 , Berg & Hellenthal, 1992 ; Brown & Fitzpatrick, 1978 ;
Harveyet al., 1980;Huryn,1996a; Huryn (unpublished data). Right: plot of annual P/B
and individual body mass (M) for a broad range of taxa. Data were taken from the
literature. Body mass was estimated as B/N, where B is average population biomass
(mg/m^2 ) and N is average population density (individuals/m^2 ). Note that the slope of
N versus annual P/B (0.22) is similar to that predicted using metabolic theory (0.25;
Brownet al., 2004). The relationship between M and P/B was marginally improved
by using mean annual temperature (T) and M as independent variables (log 10 P/
Ba¼0.9796þ0.0273 T ( 8 C)0.2196 log 10 M; r^2 ¼0.42, p<0.001, df¼454). Data from
