California’s famous coast, the golden shore, the stuff of songs,
stretches roughly 1,100 miles from the dry Mediterranean climes of the
south to the lush rain forests of the north. In sunny San Diego, weather
forecasts are notoriously boring; according to legend, they are some-
times recorded days or more in advance. In the north, redwood and
Douglas fir forests drink in the driving rain and tickle water out of the
fog, seeing little sun for months out of the year.
