Antarctica is vast and awesome in its indifference to the human
condition. At the same time it has become a world center for scientific
research and provided us fair warning about the human impact of
global warming on our climate. The message from the ice is as plain
as the bones I found scattered around a dying penguin colony. Our
world, and theirs, Antarctica’s Southern Ocean and America’s Blue
Frontier, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Jersey Shore, are more closely
linked than we imagine.
