Colin Woodardis a self-employed writer and journalist and author of
Ocean’s End: Travels through Endangered Seas(Basic Books, 2001), a nar-
rative non-fiction account of the deterioration of the world’s oceans. He
has reported from more than thirty foreign countries and six conti-
nents for the San Francisco Chronicle, the Christian Science Monitor, the
Chronicle of Higher Education, and many other publications. His second
book, The Lobster Coast: Rebels, Rusticators, and the Struggle for a
Forgotten Frontier, a cultural and environmental history of coastal
Maine, will be published by Viking in 2004. He lives in Portland,
