Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)

The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) is an international, not-for-profit, membership-
based research and development organization. Part of the Faculty of Health
Sciences at the University of Adelaide, South Australia, they collaborate interna-
tionally with over 70 entities. The Institute and its collaborating entities promote
and support the synthesis, transfer, and utilization of evidence by identifying
feasible, appropriate, meaningful, and effective practices to improve healthcare
outcomes globally. JBI includes Best Practice information sheets that are pro-
duced specifically for health professionals and are based on evidence reported in
systematic reviews. The JBI resources and tools are available only by subscription
through Ovid, and a medical librarian can identify the organization’s access to
this resource.

Selecting Resources Outside of the Nursing Literature


At times it may become necessary to expand searches beyond the core nursing
literature. Databases typically related to nursing research and practice are briefly
presented in this section.

PsycINFO

PsycINFO is a database supported by the American Psychological Association
that focuses on research in psychology and the behavioral and social sciences.
PsycINFO contains more than 4 million records, including journal articles, book
chapters, book reviews, editorials, clinical case reports, empirical studies, and
literature reviews. The controlled vocabulary for PsycINFO is available through
the Thesaurus feature. Thesaurus terms can be searched as major headings and
can be exploded to search for terms that are related and more specific. Searches
in PsycINFO can be limited by record type, methodology, language, and age to
allow for a more targeted search.

Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)

The HaPI database contains approximately 190,000 records for scholarly jour-
nals, books, and technical reports. HaPI is produced by the Behavioral Measure-
ment Database Services and provides behavioral measurement instruments for
