6 Evidence Appraisal: Research 141
including research findings, into practice decisions. Research articles can be in-
timidating to novice and expert nurses alike. Because many EBP teams do not
have the skill set to fully judge the proper use of statistics in the studies under
review, it is highly recommended that teams draw on research texts, mentors, or
experts to guide the process.
Nurse leaders can best support EBP by providing clinicians with the knowl-
edge and skills necessary to appraise research evidence. Only through continu-
ous learning can clinicians gain the confidence needed to incorporate evidence
gleaned from research into the day-to-day care of individual patients.
Summary
This chapter arms EBP teams with practical information to guide the appraisal
of research evidence, a task that is often difficult for nonresearchers. An overview
of the various types of research evidence is presented, including attention to indi-
vidual research studies and summaries of multiple research studies. Tips for read-
ing research reports are provided, along with guidance on how to appraise the
strength and quality of research evidence.
