Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Thrid Edition: Model and Guidelines

(vip2019) #1

Foreword

I am thrilled to present the third edition of Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-
Based Practice: Model and Guidelines. This new edition reaffirms the original
mission of the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (JHNEBP)
model: “Support the safety of our patients, the development of our profession,
and the education of our students.” Patient outcomes and clinician-peer feed-
back have contributed greatly to this edition that we hope supports nursing as
the United States’ most trusted profession.

In the late 1990s, U.S. experts drew all of our attention to the alarming num-
ber of medical mistakes related to poor communication and variation in care
standards through the groundbreaking report, To Err Is Human (Institute of
Medicine, 2000). The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) work catapulted nursing’s
transition from focusing solely on applying new knowledge to connecting that
knowledge to patient outcomes with the goal of improving healthcare quality.
Over the past decade, nursing has been called to lead interprofessional care
teams within an expectant healthcare system. These expectations have resulted
in the development of best practices at all levels of nursing that require
evidence-based competencies.
Johns Hopkins nursing has a well-earned reputation for questioning tradition-
al practice decisions, which provides a rich environment for the development
of evidence-based guidelines. In this third edition, the revised JHNEBP model
incorporates this spirit of inquiry promoting the scientific examination of
practice questions and the appraisal of evidence. The translation of the high-
est quality of evidence is used to inform both learning and nursing practice. In
collaboration with patients, families, and caregivers, nurses impact improve-
ments in healthcare quality, safety, equity, and values as outlined in the Insti-
tute of Medicine Report: The Future of Nursing (2011).
This third edition of the JHNEBP model and guidelines has been revised to
include learning from 10 years of use in practice and feedback provided by
