Identify Next Steps
After the successful implementation and favorable evaluation of recommendations,
and with support from decision-makers, changes are implemented on a wider scale,
if appropriate. The team reviews the process and results and considers the next
steps. Organization-wide, or additional unit implementation, requires a modified
action plan and, possibly, reassignment of responsibilities to an individual, a team,
or a committee. Considerations for the new team can include a new question that
emerges from the process, additional training or education for colleagues involved
in the process change, and suggestions for new measures or tools for the evalua-
tion. The recommendations are then implemented and evaluated.
Disseminate Findings
The level of communication regarding the findings and dissemination of informa-
tion is based on the scope and complexity of the problem. Evidence-based project
outcomes are communicated internally to all members involved in the care of the
patient or population affected by the practice changes. This communication can

Recommendations
- Identify a team from the perioperative and inpatient areas to develop
a comprehensive pressure-ulcer-prevention protocol that includes all
perioperative phases (preoperatively through discharge). - The nurse manager of the OR will evaluate the use of current pressure-
relieving devices for patients at risk and report current practices and
compliance to the Nursing Quality Improvement Committee. - The Operating Room Quality Improvement Committee will evaluate
gel and alternating-pressure mattresses in the operating room and
recommend changes, if indicated, to the Products Committee and the
Operating Room Procedure Committee. - The Operating Room Procedure Committee will review and standardize
OR positioning protocols. - The Operating Room Evidence-Based Practice Committee will develop a
risk assessment and screening tool for patients undergoing surgery.
