Appendix I: Action Planning Tool

Translating EBP findings into practice is multifaceted and is the fundamental part
of the PET process—the reason why EBP projects are undertaken. Once the team
has determined the fit and feasibility of the change, the next step is to plan for
implementation. Appendix I provides an opportunity to identify strengths in the
internal environment, potential barriers, and plans for mitigation. In addition, it
prompts the team to confirm the available resources and funding prior to rollout.
Finally, Appendix I guides the team to group the action planning tasks into criti-
cal milestones. Figure 11.8 shows the completed Appendix I based on the exem-
plar.

Consider the following as you examine fit:
Are the recommendations:
✘ Compatible with the unit/departmental/organizational cultural values or norms?
✘ Consistent with unit/departmental/organizational assumptions, structures, attitudes, beliefs, and/or
practices?
✘ Consistent with the unit/departmental/organizational priorities?

Consider the following questions as you examine feasibility:
✘ Can we do what they did in our work environment?
✘ Are the following supports available?
■ Resources
■ Funding
■ Approval from administration and clinical leaders
■ Stakeholder support
✘ Is it likely that the recommendations can be implemented within the unit/department/organization?

Answering questions about fit and feasibility allows
the team to determine the likelihood of success of the
implementation. Not meeting all of the criteria does not
mean the practice change cannot happen. However,
it does indicate the need for further assessment and
evaluation. For example, not having support available
may mean you need to engage more stakeholders. Of
course, recommendations that are not a good fit and/or
feasible should not be implemented.
