(ff) #1

Plate 17.1 FAO estimates of annual world capture-fisheries yields since 1950. Colors
of bar segments represent, from the bottom: blue, clupeids (herrings, anchovy, ...);
maroon, demersal fish (cod, hake, flatfish); cream, jacks and other pelagic; pale blue,
miscellaneous; purple, tuna, bonito; pink, anadromous (salmon, shad), followed by
sharks, crustacea, mollusks (about half squid); and yellow, approximation of at-sea
discards. Because of category selections, these bars do not add exactly to the FAO
world totals. Categories changed in 2000–2001, mostly by moving some demersal and
pelagic catch to “unidentified marine” (combined from 2001 here in the pale blue).
However, some demersal catches declined at the same time, partly through closures.
