publishers. I thought they would be jumping up and
down, saying: ‘This is what we’ve always wanted!’ But
they were really calm about it. It was the best response
because I didn’t feel pressured.”
After seven years working on the novel, Cecelia says
she “can’t wait for people to read it” and would
“absolutely love” to see a big-screen adaptation.
Writing it was emotional – “Every day I cried at my
desk,” she says – but ultimately fulfilling.
“Writing is such a release for me, so it was lovely to
write somebody’s storyline and cry. I always feel better
after.” A “disciplined routine” helps the 37-year-old writer,
who is also mum to nine-year-old daughter Robin and is
expecting a third child with her husband David Keoghan
next month, deal with the emotion when working.
“At 5.30pm I go back to my life. I’ve got two kids, so
reality takes over.”
MAKING IT ON HER OWN
The younger daughter of former Irish Prime Minister Bertie
Ahern, Cecelia was adamant she had to make it on her own.
“When some people suggested that I got the book deal
for PS, I Love You because my dad was the Taoiseach, I felt
this steely determination to do everything myself. I often
made things harder for myself by not taking any assistance,
because everybody needs help sometimes.”
Her success since – her books have sold around
25 million copies worldwide – is all the more impressive.
“Touch wood, I still have lots of ideas. That’s because
I’m always thinking and analysing and absorbing. It’s the
way my mind works.”
With just weeks until her due date, Cecelia, who lives in
Dublin, is looking forward to welcoming a new member
to the family.
“We don’t know if it’s a girl or boy, but I’m more
interested to know who this new character is that’s coming
into our lives. There are many possibilities of personalities
that we could bring into our life.”
When the new addition does make his or her
appearance, Cecelia and David, 40, will be outnumbered.
Luckily, Cecelia’s sister Georgina, who is married to
Westlife star Nicky Byrne, has plenty of experience when it
comes to parenting a trio of little ones.
“My sister is brilliant with help. She has twin boys and a
little girl... If you have twins, you can do anything.”

in New York to promote the 2007 film adaptation of PS, I Love
Yo u. In the hit movie Hilary plays Holly opposite Gerard Butler’s
Gerry (below left). The double Oscar-winning actress has
already expressed interest in Cecelia’s sequel to the novel
