With supercapacitors, of course.
Sant’Agata’s first step into
electrification is the limited-run
Sian supercar. By Jake Groves

How do you

hybridise a

Lambo V12?

‘Lamborghini is, inherently, a rule
breaker. With the Sian, we set
ourselves the challenge of creating
the best hybrid solution for a
Lamborghini to provide the first
step in our electrification strategy.’

The mating of e-power to a V12 means
the Sian is the quickest accelerating
car Lamborghini has made, hitting
62mph from a standstill in less than
2.8 seconds and going on to a top
speed of 218mph.
In-gear acceleration is where the
biggest measurable difference can
be found; Lamborghini says the Sian
transmits its power to the road 10 per
cent more efficiently between 19 and
37mph, and 20 per cent between 44
and 75mph – where it’s 1.2 seconds
quicker than an Aventador SVJ.

Where the Sian differs from any other
current Lamborghini is in having
a 48-volt electric motor integrated
into the gearbox, adding a peak of
34bhp to the V12’s already healthy
output and eliminating torque loss
during gearchanges. There are green
benefits – such as the ability to park
and reverse using e-power alone – but
much of Lamborghini’s focus has
been on using hybrid tech to enhance
the car’s performance.
The secret up the Sian’s sleeve is
its energy storage solution, using a
supercapacitor instead of a traditional
lithium-ion battery pack. Lambo
claims using this process is roughly
three times lighter and more powerful
than a more conventional battery.
