’80s when I was working and living
in Norway for 10 years and read every
single article as the only wheels I could
afford then was a 1976 Mazda 616.
Dreaming of better.
I hope this helps your campaign to
improve the paper quality.
Nick Brunner
Best since 1980
Ben Miller’s description of a day with
the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera
Volante is the single best piece of
writing about a car that I’ve read since
CAR’s description of a fast dash across
Germany in a then new black Porsche
924 Carrera GT (yes, I’ve been reading
CAR that long).
Sadly I can’t remember the author
[Mel Nichols] and I loaned the maga-
zine to someone who lost it years ago,
but I recall the same sense of being in
the car with the author rather than in
a chair reading a magazine. I’d love to
read that review again.
As to the car – absolutely stunning
and then ruined by the cheap nasty
gaping grille that looks better suited to
a Fiesta ST. Who thought it was a good
idea to throw away Aston’s signature
grille? It’s like BMW ditching the kidney
grille, genuinely bizarre.
Finally, a word on paper quality.
Making such a quality publication
out of such cheap paper is a little like
finishing a new Ferrari with matt
emulsion on a roller. You know it’s as
good as it has ever been underneath,
but you can’t escape the conclusion
that it just looks and feels low rent.
Take a look at Motor Boat & Yachting
magazine – they facelifted about the
same time as you but upgraded rather
than downgraded the paper quality and
the effect is transformational.
Keep up the good work and the great
drive stories, and sack the accountant
that specifies your paper quality!
Nick Burnham
Keep the feedback coming – it all
helps in our efforts to make CAR
the magazine you want. And Nick,
you’ll find this and many more of Mel
Nichols’ best drive stories in the book
And the Revs Keep Rising: Great
Drives in Fast Cars, published by
Haynes in 2013. BM
