riving for pure pleasure and that alone. Not from A to B but from A to A,
not because you have to but because you want to. That’s what SCGT is all
about. Numbers don’t come into it – it’s about which of 2019’s greatest new
performance cars feels the most immersive to drive, for the pure fun of it.
These are the six new-for-2019 cars that, more than any others, feel like
they were built for days like this.
They also prove there’s no right or wrong way to design a great driver’s
car: between them they have 15 doors and 42 cylinders, arranged in vees,
in flats and in line, at the front, the middle and the back. And a collective
2712bhp. Good job it’s not raining. Yet.
We assemble in Snowdonia under bruised clouds, and a distant aviating
pig, as 2019 was the year Toyota’s long-rumoured, long-teased resurrection
of the Supra sports car finally made it into the wild (with a little help from
BMW). Even more improbably, it lives up to the hype: this is a characterful,
engaging coupe with an old-school heart. Qualities that might just see this
plucky underdog spring a surprise against some serious exotica.
None more exotic than the McLaren 600LT Spider. McLaren’s entry-
level Sports Series supercar loses its roof to put its driver even more in touch
