chain cleavage, and continuing through the pathways leadings to glucocorticoids,
mineralocorticoids, estrogens, progestins, and androgens, these hormones are
capable of interconverting, metabolizing, and inactivating steroid hormones in
the brain. This is still an unexplored field of science and connection of these
pathway disturbances to development of ASD is still in its infancy.
In summary, the experimental animal studies and observations in humans
exposed to EDC consistently show that the structure and function of the brain’s
neuroendocrine systems can be altered by developmental exposures to EDCs.

Are the EDCs and other Synthetic Chemicals Depopulating

the Human Race?

After looking at the evidence, is it possible that synthetic chemicals that have
entered our lives may be actually responsible for depopulating the human race?
If synthetic chemicals are interfering with fetal development and neurodevel
opment of our next generations, then there must be some evidence for this.
In our view, exposure to synthetic chemicals, in the forms of fragrances, herbi
cides, EDCs, and any other forms, are affecting our unborn at a very early stage
of pregnancy. If this is true, then the spontaneous abortions rate must have
increased significantly in the industrialized regions of the world where the use
of synthetic chemicals is the highest, as compared with developing nations.
There is evidence supporting such an outcome. For example, since the intro
duction of synthetic chemicals during the last 50–100 years, populations of
industrialized countries all over the world have experienced a decline in total
fertility rates (average number of live births per woman) far below 2.1, which is
the rate considered necessary to sustain a population size at current numbers.
In addition, other male reproductive problems, several of which are linked
to  testicular cancer, including disorders of spermatogenesis, are widespread
and have recently been the focus of many basic and clinical research projects
(Figure 7.17).
Is the incidence of spontaneous abortions are increasing? We have to clarify
certain facts about pregnancy: 50% of all conceptions are lost and remain
unrecognized. About 15% of recognized pregnancies are lost, generally around
weeks 12–14 of gestation. About 10–20% of women suffer one sporadic spon
taneous abortion. About 2% of women suffer two spontaneous abortions and
about 0.4% suffer three spontaneous abortions. Therefore, if a larger percent
age of women are suffering from unrecognized loss of pregnancies, it would be
difficult to determine. The only barometer one can use is to determine if total
fertility rates have been declining in the nations that use the largest amounts of
synthetic chemicals in the forms of fragrances, EDCs, herbicides and synthetic
food flavors, drinks and other forms of consumables. Let us see if this notion is
supported.
