Foreword

The field of canine sports medicine and reha-
bilitation has rapidly evolved since acceptance
of the American College of Veterinary Sports
Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) in
2010 by the American Veterinary Medical
Association as a veterinary specialty. This field
addresses the diagnosis, treatment, and reha-
bilitation of the complex, often multiple, inju-
ries experienced by large numbers of dogs that
participate in sports and those with jobs such as
police and assistance dogs. In addition, many
dogs lead very athletic lives, playing retrieving
games, hiking on the weekends, or running
with their owners; these, too, often experience
the long‐term effects of wear and tear on their
bodies.
A significant driver in the evolution of the
field of canine sports medicine and rehabilita-
tion has been the cross‐pollination of expertise
and ideas between veterinary and human med-
icine for the benefit of canine athletes. This, in
turn, has raised the bar in terms of our knowl-
edge of orthopedics, neurology, internal medi-
cine, nutrition/exercise physiology, and
rehabilitation for the benefit of all dogs. In the
spirit of this highly beneficial veterinary‐human

medicine collaboration, Drs Chris Zink and
Janet B. Van Dyke have brought together a
multi‐talented group of veterinarians and allied
health professionals who have presented the
most up‐to‐date evidence in this outstanding,
easy‐to‐read, and informative Second Edition.
This Second Edition represents the combined
work of 36 authors, including 27 veterinarians,
nine allied health professionals, and 15 diplo-
mates of the American College of Veterinary
Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Every
chapter has been extensively revised and
expanded resulting in a 20% increase in size
over the First Edition. As an integrated whole,
it provides a wealth of evidence, expertise, and
experience to this complex, interactive disci-
pline for the benefit of every veterinary health‐
care team. Presented in full color, with
outstanding illustrations and abundant case
studies, this text provides readers at all levels of
experience with detailed yet practical informa-
tion that can be applied to canine patients of all
ages.
