Monitoring Threatened Species and Ecological Communities

(Ben Green) #1
9 – Summary: monitoring extent and adequacy for threatened biodiversity^133

monitoring for various, and sometimes differing, purposes and their monitoring
programs tend to have a site-based or single jurisdictional focus, rather than a
national one. Given these realities, designing and implementing high-quality
national monitoring program for a particular taxon or ecological community will
involve significant challenges (see Introduction for a discussion of the challenges,
and potential solutions).
The assessments in Chapters 3–8 highlight that national monitoring for
threatened biodiversity is currently mostly inadequate, but the overview also
provides a foundation for more comprehensive monitoring programs generally,
and indicates a set of best-practice principles (Chapter 2) that should be considered
in developing new programs.
