Saving our Species: a cost-effective,

large-scale monitoring and

evaluation program for

threatened species

James Brazill-Boast

Summary

The New South Wales Government’s threatened species management program,
Saving our Species (SoS), identifies critical priorities for securing over 1000 of the
state’s threatened species and ecological communities from extinction. Crucial to
meeting the program’s objectives is having a robust framework for monitoring and
evaluating outcomes on the ground. SoS has been designed to improve on
historical attempts by various natural resource management organisations and
governments to demonstrate outcomes of threatened species investment. The SoS
monitoring, evaluation and reporting framework provides guidance across the
program to all government and non-government stakeholders implementing SoS
