Chapter 17•Cancer of the Head and Neck 203

Answer 17.17. The answer is A.
Induction chemotherapy followed by definitive radiation has the potential
to treat unresectable tumors and increase organ preservation rates. In a
phase III trial of patients with glottis and supraglottic SCC, there was no
significant survival difference between induction chemotherapy followed
by definitive radiation versus concurrent chemoradiation. However, there
was a statistically significant organ preservation advantage with the con-
current chemoradiation approach. The addition of docetaxel improved
overall survival in the TAX 324 trial.
