Today’s pick

Russia’s Restless ’90s
Radio 4, 8pm
Tim Whewell’s examination
of the history of the country
in that glorious decade
following the collapse of the
Soviet Union opens with
Boris Yeltsin, right, now
president and determined to
shake off 70 years of state
control in favour of a more
capitalist and democratic
approach. Private business,
travel and culture was, for
the first time, encouraged,
and suddenly there was
serious money to be made.

Which is where the problems
begin. After Yeltsin’s “shock
therapy” and the
plummeting value of the
rouble, it wasn’t long before
long the country was facing
civil unrest. Ben Dowell
