Synoptic situation
High pressure will keep
southern and eastern Britain
largely dry with hazy sunshine,
but an area of low pressure will
approach from the Atlantic,
the associated fronts bringing
cloud and outbreaks of rain
across northern and western
areas. This will continue to
drift southwards overnight and
during Sunday, with the fi rst
rain in weeks for some places.

T
he weather over the bank
holiday weekend is best
summed up as cloudy with
some sunny intervals. There
is some good news for
gardeners and farmers, with some
rain in places as a weather front
spreads from the northwest, although
that rain will tend to weaken by the
time it reaches much of England and
Wales, and whether it makes much
difference to parched gardens and
fields remains to be seen.
Rain in May is needed, as an old
Scottish saying goes: “A wet May
and a winnie / Makes a fu’ stackyard
and a finnie.”
The saying suggests that rain in
May and “winnie” (wind) afterwards
makes crops grow well, with a
“finnie” good-quality grain judged
by the feel of the grain in the hand,
and “fu’ stackyard”, a full yard
where grain was stacked ready for
threshing.
In fact, much of April has been in
the grip of high pressure that has
left most of the country dry and at
Holbeach in Lincolnshire just 7mm
of rain — barely a trickle — had
fallen by yesterday. And yet despite
the lack of rain, temperatures across
the UK have been unremarkable, to
say the least.
Even though much of this bank
holiday weekend is expected to be
dominated by clouds, conditions are
largely calm and some sunny spells
could break through and lift
temperatures. In fact, Monday may
turn out to be the best day for
England and Wales, with a chance of
brighter, milder conditions.
But beyond Bank Holiday Monday
a danger lurks to the north of the
UK as a large bulge of cold air slips
southwards from the Arctic.
Whether this polar cold air actually
arrives here is uncertain, and some
forecasts are optimistic that the cold
air will fail to reach the UK and
temperatures will remain
reasonably mild. But if the cold air
does arrive it will bring another
chilly spell next week and the threat
of the return of frost in places. But
one thing is agreed: high pressure is
close by, and that means it will be
largely dry but with some showers
in northern parts.
