Behind the Scenes

Kathy Ryan, director of photography:
‘‘For our article about the actor Henry Winkler,
we assigned the photographer Devin Oktar
Yalkin, who has a way of thinking outside the
box for celebrity portraits. His images aren’t
idealizing and they’re not necessarily focused
on beauty, yet they’re always ennobling. He
is drawn to strong, hard light, and he found
it at Winkler’s home in L.A., allowing him
to document a wide range of emotions. Taking
a portrait at someone’s home always gives you
a chance to create an intimate and meaningful
image.’’ Photograph by Ricky Landon Jackson.
