Dedicated to John the Baptist, this
building was consecrated in 1059
and completed in the 1100s. Andrea
Pisano’s bronze doors were added
in the 14th century. A century later,
the design competition for another
set of elaborate doors was won
by Lorenzo Ghiberti. His rival in
the competition was Brunelleschi,
future builder of the dome.
