CHANGING DESIGNS
In 1587 Francis I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, gave
orders for the cathedral’s original facade to be
stripped, on the grounds that it had become out-
dated. The facade remained bare until 1887, when
it was completely rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style,
following a design by Emilio de Fabris that was
close to Giotto’s original vision for the cathedral.
