HOPE FLOATS

While you’ll contend with some
familiar survival systems in
Nightingale, like keeping your health
up and protecting yourself from heat
or cold in different environments,
there’s a another meter players will
contend with built on an entirely
different notion than physical
survival. It’s hope.
“All Realmwalkers carry an
amount of hope with them,” says
Flynn. “And it’s a bar on your UI. As
you do positive things, hope goes up.
As you do negative things, as negative
things happen to you, hope goes
down. And so you have to manage
that hope through the dangerous
parts of the realms as you go
adventuring. And you’ll want to look
to things to increase your overall pool
of hope over time, you get stronger,
you get more resilient and there’ll be
things that come at you that will
shatter your hope and make you feel
lost and alone forever.”

Another survival game,
Frostpunk, also had a hope meter
(along with a discontent meter)
that reflected the mood of your
citizens in the post-apocalyptic city
builder, but here in Nightingale it’s
focused on the individual player. I
can see the hope meter in one of the
clips I’m shown, as a player visits
the realm in the early game,
chopping trees and gathering
resources. The bar is barely filled. In
another clip it’s entirely empty: the
character is hopeless and has to find
shelter to recharge.
“So the survival bars are
traditionally grounded in the
physical: health, hunger, etc,” says
Flynn. “And now we want to bring in
a one that speaks more to a
psychological element.
“A fun question developers ask
themselves is, what’s the power of
hope? And so what if you did things
that just absolutely swelled your
hope beyond belief? What could
you do in that mindset? What
could you achieve?”
What indeed?
