4 TIME-LIFE MIRACLES OF FAITH

T

he Bible’s biggest miracle worker never
stopped surprising his friends. The
Book of Matthew tells the story of a boy
possessed by a demon. After His disci-
ples tried and failed to heal the boy, ac-
cording to Matthew, Jesus was able to excise the demon
instantly. When His disciples asked why they couldn’t
do it, Jesus told them, “Because you have so little faith.
Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard
seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here
to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible
for you.” Casting out the demon was just one of many
noted examples of religious miracles.
Although miraculous happenings are features of
practically all faiths, these pages highlight the wonders
of the Hebrew and Christian bibles, like Moses and the
burning bush and the resurrection of Jesus, along with
the apparitions of Mary and the divine works of Chris-
tian saints.
A miracle is commonly defined as a divine action
that extends beyond natural law— which cannot be ex-
plained within the natural powers of man—and there-
fore must be the result of supernatural intercession.
Miracles such as Jesus saving the possessed boy can
be debated by science and history, but the inclusion of
these stories in the scriptures illustrates the power and
grace of God.▪
