the angel leads Peter to a side street, then vanishes.
“Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and res-
cued me from the hands of Herod,” Peter says to himself
as he hurries to the house where church members have
gathered to pray. He knocks on the door, and the servant
woman who answers, named Rhoda, is so shocked to see
him that she runs to tell the flock without letting him in!
Naturally, they do not believe her. It must be Peter’s angel,
they conclude. How could Peter have come to them while
they were in the very act of praying for his deliverance?
Peter keeps knocking until he is finally admitted, to
everyone’s astonishment. Peter explains to them that, no,
he is not an angel, but he has seen one. In fact, an angel set
him free. ▪
