Lovers of blue flowers will enjoy
the new penstemon Blue of Zurich
(Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Züriblau’).
Foxglove-like bells of gentian
blue, with pink at the base, adorn
steep spikes above the narrow
leaves. A favourite with butterflies
and bees, this summer-flowering
perennial grows 30–50cm high,
and prefers full sun or semi-shade,
along with good drainage.

Orange flowers with a red tinge cover
the ferny foliage of the low-growing,
compact sub-shrub, Bidens ferulifolia
‘Campfire’. Bred to have large blooms,
this perennial is both tough and pretty,
with abundant flowers from autumn
right through winter and into spring.
It prefers full sun but will also tolerate
semi-shade. Plants grow 20–25cm
high and wide, making them ideal for
hanging baskets, pots and low borders.

Did you know mauve roses are
said to convey love at first sight?
This long-flowering Floribunda rose,
‘Tangles’, is named after a Southern
Right Whale that was rescued last year
after being entangled in cray-pot ropes
not far from the Treloar Roses farm in
Victoria. Clusters of blooms cover the
disease-free, low-growing bush to
70–90cm high and 50–70cm wide,
which is perfect for a small garden or
a container. Sales of ‘Tangles’ roses
support whale research and rescue.
