Yellow aphids
Be on the alert for clusters of bright,
golden-coloured aphids on the stems
of mandevillas, allamandas, oleanders,
hoyas and other plants with milky sap.
Over time, these sap suckers can
weaken plants and encourage black
sooty mould on leaves and stems,
which looks ugly and affects the plant’s
ability to photosynthesise. Wearing
gloves, cut off and bin any heavily
infested shoots, squash aphids by
hand, or spray them with insecticidal
soap. Wash your hands thoroughly
after handling sappy plant material,
which can be poisonous or irritating.
Once the pests have gone, sooty
mould will gradually disappear.
