Finger guns at the ready:

it’s Stringfellow-core
Possibly in reaction to the trend for oversize trousers, kilts
and platform heels, the ultimate flex in menswear is to go
old-school alpha and sleazy. No, not fat ties, skinny jeans and
mullets à la indie sleaze — this goes back to the king of
sticky-floored Soho nightclubs, Peter Stringfellow
(above and bottom). With his chest hair, fondness for
leopard print, singlets, leather vests, fur jackets and
too-tight crotches, Stringfellow did lairy chic to a
tee. Now a host of celebs are working the look:
see Chris Pine (top right) with his Man from Del
Monte-style safari suit, scraggly hair and Lothario
beard; and Jake Johnson (middle) playing a porn
baron in the TV show Minx with his unbuttoned
hippy shirts, leather trousers and waistcoats.
It’s a look that says “I’m behind the velvet rope
doing unironic finger guns at you right now”.
And it’s not only about the aesthetic — if
you’re really going for it, also have some
unexpected Alan Partridge quips prepared.

Sonic the Hedgehog

hair? Why not
Not since Léa Seydoux took a style tip from
the anthropomorphic mammal in Blue Is the Warmest
Colour have cerulean manes had such a moment.
Recently we had Diplo (below left) and J Balvin (bottom
left) at the Grammys, Sophia Vergara on Insta and
Saweetie at Coachella (below right) showing off
waves of blue. It’s giving us Lisa from Steps
(bottom) vibes. So why is it happening
now? “There’s the influence of fantasy-
type filters on social media, which allow
us to try on fun new colours and fall in
love with them,” says the hair historian
Rachael Gibson. “The Y2K trend has also
had an impact, as these pop-punk,
cartoony colours feel really early 2000s.”
The new blue-rinse brigade, anyone?
