Reach for the aftersun. The difference
between this and your normal body
moisturiser, according to Thomson, is that
“aftersuns usually contain moisturising,
cooling ingredients such as aloe vera”. Don’t
mistake this for protection, though, these
products are strictly for comfort. “Sunburnt
skin shouldn’t be exposed to the sun again
until it’s fully healed, so seek shade and cover
up with clothing until it’s healed,” he adds.

5 SPF TABLETS ARE A FAD
“SPF tablets that consist of a powerful
blend of antioxidants have, in the past, been
advertised as a convenient method to
protect the skin from sun damage and
tanning,” Laftah says. “We do not have the
scientific evidence to prove they can
provide sufficient protection, so they
should not replace sunscreen.” The
consultant dermatologist Dr Emma
Wedgeworth agrees: “No tablet or dietary
supplement can prevent UV damage or
sunburn and so these must not be used in
place of sunscreen.”
