NATIONAL LEAGUE

Television

presenter and

Aston Villa

fan Michelle

Owen on the

importance

of Coutinho

BEST OF TIMES?
March 2014, in the North Stand for a
game against Norwich City. Right in
front of me, Christian Benteke
chested the ball down and scored
with a magical overhead kick. And
Jed Steer giving Mason Holgate the
eye and saving his penalty at The
Hawthorns in 2019 to take us to the
Championship play-off final.

WORST OF TIMES?
The 2000 FA Cup final against
Chelsea. We didn’t have Sky so I
watched it at our neighbours’ house
in my goalkeeper’s kit. I cried and
cried. I’m more measured now.

FAVOURITE PLAYER?
Jack Grealish. I know he gets a bad
press and I know he does silly things
sometimes, but I’ve never seen
anyone light up a pitch like him. I was
sorry to see him go but he gave us so
much to be grateful for. And he kept
us up at West Ham last year.

LEAST FAVOURITE PLAYER?
Maybe Juan Pablo Ángel could have
scored more goals. Maybe Bosko
Balaban. Charles N’Zogbia? Eric
Djemba-Djemba? Oh, I know: Peter
Enckelman, who wanted the ground
to swallow him up after he’d let Olof
Mellberg’s throw-in through against

Birmingham City. There was no
future for him at Villa after that. He’d
let everybody down.

IS IT GOING WRONG FOR VILLA
RIGHT NOW?
We’re on a bad run but we’ve played
all right in a couple of those games.
It’s a weird part of the season: we
know we’re safe, we’re know we’re
not going to make Europe, so it’s
difficult to get the best out of players.
What I don’t like is scapegoating.
Tyrone Mings isn’t a problem, Ollie
Watkins doesn’t stop running...

MAIN THING TO DO FOR NEXT SEASON?
Sign Philippe Coutinho, build around
him and then we can challenge for
the top eight. Villa fans are desperate
to get back into Europe.

MY CLUB

WHY ASTON VILLA?
None of my family are into football at
all, but I was a tomboy who played
football. Aged four I had an Andy
Townsend sticker I treasured and I
cottoned on that Birmingham was
the nearest big city to our house on
the Shropshire/Wales border. That
was it: I was stuck with them.

EARLY MEMORIES?
My uncle was a Spurs fan
from Solihull and in the
spring of 1997, he listened to
Spurs on the radio while he
took me and my cousin to
Villa Park to see the 0-0 with
West Ham. I was only seven,
but I’d wanted to go for so
long. Sat in the Trinity
Road Stand, I felt part of
something. I even loved
the smell of the
programme. Benteke’s stunning overhead kick
