On the lookout for a part-time job, a young woman
gives being a ‘life model’ a spin with amusing results

THEYEARWAS1983andIwas20yearsold.I’dleft
Scotland two years previously to move to a small
town in Devon, England. This seaside resort was the
kind of place where everybody knows everybody
else,whichwasabitofacultureshockforacitygirl
like me. I had a full-time job but was always on the
lookoutforextrapart-timework.Oneday,Iwas
reading the adverts in the local job centre and a
card asking for a model caught my eye. Mostly out
of curiosity, I asked the job centre manager, who
happened to be a friend, what was involved.
