The first line of defence against the

elements — whether it be pollution,

UV or blue light — is our epidermis,

the outermost layer of skin. A young

epidermis (lest we need reminding)

is dense, thick and undergoes

continuous regeneration, so cells

are plump and youthful, operating at full

speed. But as we age, things start to

slow down, the epidermis becomes

thinner and the cells become less active.

But researchers at Chanel have

discovered that the SNEV protein

(short for SeNescence Evasion Factor)

acts like a cheerleader, boosting

cellular activity and revving it back

up to optimal function, which helps the

epidermis look and act younger. To

activate SNEV, the researchers have

turned to the perennial plant solidago.

“Chanel Research carried out a lot

of tests to evaluate the efficacy of our

exclusive solidago extract and found

it stimulates the expression of SNEV in

the cells,” says Armelle Souraud,

Chanel’s director of scientific

communication. “The solidago extract

counteracts the effects of ageing by

improving cellular vitality and restoring

the density of the skin, so it improves the

thickness of the epidermis by up to 54

per cent.” Featured in the brand’s new

night-time when skin is in repair mode,

but the addition of vanilla planifolia
