Synoptic situation
A slack pressure pattern across
Britain and Ireland will lead to
a rather cloudy day with many
places staying largely dry with
some bright or sunny intervals.
A weak cold front will drift
southwards across Britain and
help to generate a scattering
of showers, particularly across
northern England. An occluded
front near Ireland will produce
showers there.

G
rim experience of May
bank holiday weekends
in this country teaches
us to expect bad weather,
and especially on the
Early May bank holiday.
It all began in 1978, when the
original May Day bank holiday
began. It probably seemed a good
idea to have a spring break in May
but that first holiday was a
spectacular washout with buckets of
rain for much of the UK.
That inauspicious start set the
tone for many more dreadful May
Days, and changing the name to the
Early May bank holiday made little
difference to the weather. Only last
year the holiday was hit by torrential
rains and strong winds in England
and Wales, with some roads closed
in Wales from floods and fallen
trees, and water supplies cut off in
Winchester due to power cuts in
what was a thoroughly cold, wet and
windy May that is best forgotten.
One bad year could be written off
as a freak of nature, but it was only
two years before, in 2019, that the
Early May holiday was one of the
coldest on record, with snow in
Scotland and a record low of minus
6.2C at Kinbrace in the Highlands.
But it is not always gloom and doom,
and the bank holiday weekend in
2018 had a heatwave that reached
28.7C at Northolt in west London.
On average, though, three out of
four of these bank holiday weekends
have a mixed bag of weather, with
some days fine and other days wet at
least in some parts of the UK. The
problem is that uncertain weather
hardly inspires much confidence to
make plans for going out.
Indeed, on this year’s holiday
weekend, the long run of dry
weather came to an end over much
of the country with rain pushing in
from the northwest bringing wet
weather to many parts especially in
the west, and grey skies covering
much of the country yesterday
except for Scotland and Northern
Ireland.
And for the bank holiday today
there is a mixture of dull skies,
bright spells and a few scattered
showers, but warm in much of the
south.
