This week marks the 60th
anniversary of the goal scored by
Jimmy Greaves in the 1962 FA Cup
Final for Tottenham Hotspur against
Burnley. Greaves had predicted he
would score early when in the
dressing room before kick-off. Sure
enough, three minutes into the game,
he spied a narrow gap from the edge
of the area and his shot deceived
everyone.
The anniversary is marked by the
publication of Jimmy Greaves: The
One and Only, written by his close
friend Norman Giller. It is a
meandering biography which,
nonetheless, serves to underline just
how remarkable was the life of the
England striker, perhaps most famous
for not being selected for the 1966
World Cup final.
There is a photograph in the book
that shows Greaves in the dug-out, in
his sharp suit and tie, looking as
perplexed as many England fans
would have felt about his omission.
It was a controversial omission
because Greaves was such a gifted
player and enigmatic character.
Everyone admired him. Sir Geoff
Hurst, who was starting out at West
Ham United when Greaves was a
star at Spurs, was pushing his
baby daughter, Claire, in her pram
in a supermarket when he bumped
into him.
“I was so in awe of him that when I
wandered back into the street,” Hurst
told Giller, “I realised I had left Claire
in the supermarket.”
Greaves, who died last September
aged 81, was incredibly productive.
When playing for the Chelsea youth
team in 1957 he scored seven goals
in one match, which brought him to
the attention of Ted Drake, the first-
team manager.
Drake had famously scored seven
goals from eight shots for Arsenal
against Aston Villa in 1935, and he
told the young Greaves it was a feat

Greaves was a poet

and with words

thegame

that happens once in a lifetime. In his
next match Greaves scored eight.
He was one of very few Chelsea
players to own a car and the day he
bought it he drove it across London
without having had a single lesson
behind the wheel.
No one was ever breathalysed and
so he would take his team-mates to
the pub after matches.
His relationship with alcohol has
been well documented, his lowest
ebb coming when he rooted
through empty bottles of vodka in
bins for the last dregs, but he became,
in time, a confidant to many who
needed his help when battling their
own addictions.
It was Greaves’s move to Milan that
is the most fascinating period of his
life, not least because his high-profile
transfer paved the way for the end of
the maximum wage, with owners
scared that they would lose all their
most talented players.
Greaves made very little money
from his deal, however. He was
constantly fined for breaking club
rules and was deeply unhappy,
depressed and unfit.
Even then he could not stop
scoring. He ended his 14-game spell in
Italy with nine goals.
By the time he signed for West
Ham in 1970 he had a serious drink
problem, but scored twice on his
debut and was so delighted that he
wore his kit on the train home.
He became famous for his natural,
off-the-cuff style when a TV
personality and was even the
television critic for TV-am, but he was
initially reluctant to accept all the
offers of work that came his way,
including being paired with Ian St
John for the hugely successful Saint
and Greavsie.
Danny Blanchflower called Greaves
“a poet in football boots” and, as the
extensive interviews recorded by
Giller prove, he was poetic and
entertaining with words as well.

New biography sheds

even more light on ups

and downs of legendary

goalscorer’s remarkable

life, writes Alyson Rudd
