New shingle walls and barn doors in treated
pine make the shed look brand new.

T

his timber garden shed had two
major drawbacks: not only was it
falling to pieces, but storage was
minimal, with only one shelf running
the perimeter of the inside. All of the
contents were shoved in willy-nilly and
very diicult to access.
he internal structure and joists were
sound, but the doors, loor, wall shingles
and interior shelf were all rotting and
needed replacing – the only option was
to strip it down and start again. It was
a great opportunity to reconigure the
storage by adding extra shelving and
utilising vertical hanging space for tools
and bulkier items.
Keeping the original look of this
traditional shed was key to the rebuild,
which meant replicating the barn doors
and shingles. he wall shingles and
door panels, originally custom-made
from red cedar, were easy to reproduce
using cost-efective pine palings, and
treated decking pine was used for the
door frame and braces. A lap joint was
created for the door panels to keep
the weather out and the shingles were
overlapped in the style of the original.
Inside, the old shelf was removed
and new racked shelving installed on
both sides of the shed to provide plenty
of storage within easy reach. A smaller
shelf, made from spare timber, created
extra storage in the wall niche, and a
pegboard allowed additional hanging
room for smaller tools. ▶
