Into the new
Once guests pass under the rear rooline
of the old house, they enter the new
living quarters and the wow zone.
he new extension is clearly
demarcated from the rest of the house
with a bulkhead that signiies the
transition from old to new, Alex says.
A box gutter between the old house
and the new house was also added,
alongside polished concrete loors to
contrast with the lovely oak loors in
the old section of the house.
Stepping into the new part, the house
opens up into a kitchen, dining and
living spaces directly overlooking the
west-facing terrace and garden.
‘Because the orientation of the house
is east-west, with east at the front, we
needed to get light in,’ says Alex.
Alex used a lantern roof to add
another layer to the new rooline, as
well as introduce light into the home.
‘he older part of the home was
limited in terms of space and height,
so the idea with the new section was
to really open it up and create that
voluminous quality,’ Alex says.
‘he lantern roof also allows you to
push up the ceiling height in the family
and dining areas, which creates a lovely
sense of space.’ ▶
