Let there be light
One of the great advantages of a lantern
roof is its capacity to let in more light to
enhance the sense of warmth in a room.
Alex’s lantern roof features three
long strips of windows on the western,
northern and southern sides.
‘It’s practical that way, but it also
looks really good when viewed as an
architectural element from the garden,’
says Alex.
A series of motorised louvre windows
allows plenty of air into the space, while

interesting skylights in the living space
and above the kitchen bench refract the
light coming through.
‘Rather than one big glass for the
skylights, I have used difusing bales
that ilter the light through in patterns
rather than one large gash,’ Alex says.
‘he use of high lighting has also
resulted in good cross-ventilation,
which has reduced cooling costs.’
he kitchen was designed by the
owners themselves and features a

number of luxurious inishes, including
an Arabescato marble kitchen island
benchtop, as well as 3mm-thick
stainless steel benchtops and American
walnut cabinetry.
‘he couple are both keen cooks so a
good kitchen was important,’ Alex says.
he large Flos pendant lights in the
dining room were chosen as much for
their looks as their function, helping to
create a central focal point in the space
above the dining table. ▶

The kitchen successfully combines
marble with steel and walnut.
