WORDS SUSANNAH HARDY

S

ure, every room in the house is
important, but the living room
presents special challenges.
Rather than having one function, it
must fulil numerous purposes. his is
where we spend most time as a family,
with friends or blissfully alone. It’s a
space that has to deliver the perfect
combination of comfort, functionality
and style. But how to achieve it?
Whether you’re renovating or
building from scratch, by following
certain principles you will enhance
your living room design. With a little
expert advice, you can bring the space
together so it’s not only totally liveable,
but also utterly divine.

Bring in the light
One essential factor in designing any
superb living room is maximising the
amount of quality natural light in the
space. Architect Greg Prentice, of
Karmatecture in Sydney’s inner-west,
suggests having windows on more than
one wall so you have at least two points
of natural light.
‘You can have a giant set of windows
or glass doors looking out to a sunny
space, but the living room might still
feel dark and gloomy,’ says Greg. ‘But
if there’s a well-proportioned window
in behind the main outlook of the room,
all of a sudden we feel that the room
is brighter and lighter.’ ▶
