50 JULY 2018 Australian Handyman
THE RENOVATION
Once the old kitchen was pared back to
its bare bones and the scraps discarded
in a skip bin, Barry could begin his
renovation rescue. he irst problem
he encountered was the century-old
plaster on the walls. It would be a big job
to remove it all. As it was mostly in good
condition, however, he simply removed
the damaged sections and installed
V-joint panelling over the top to save
some money and time.
Professional plasterers installed
Gyprock over the old wallpaper on the
ceiling for the same reason. he walls
were then painted a soft blue-grey to
give a fresh and bright look, in a colour
that complemented the crisp white
paint of the new ceiling.
Additional storage was provided
by Barry’s installation of functional
Kaboodle cabinets that used loor and
wall space. A wider bamboo bench went
in, along with a new kitchen sink, lights
and white-tiled splashback. Finally,
with some stylish black detailing and
herbs ready for the picking on the
windowsill, the kitchen had arrived in
time for the rest of the 21st century. ▶
