Ferdinand Alexander ‘Butzi’ Porsche established
his design house in 1972, nine years after
penning the 901. His debut product was a
watch called the Chronograph I – the first to
use black PVD coating – and it became a design
icon. Porsche’s credo of form following function
was patent in the colour scheme modelled on
automotive instruments. For decades Porsche
Design relied on partners to manufacturer
its watches, but that changed in 2014 with
the launch of its own watchmaking facility in
Switzerland. Timepiece No.1, shown here, is the
first designed and made in-house, and some of
the 500 limited-edition units remain available.
No. 1 takes styling cues from the Chronograph I,
with a modern twist, and is based on a 42mm
titanium case housing a Valjoux 7750 automatic
movement with 48-hour power reserve.

Minimalist German watchmak
Nomos has drawn inspiration
from its country’s unrestricted
highway network to create
this sleek timepiece called the
Autobahn. Its unique bowl-shape
dial (and sub-dial) curves toward
its centre, creating a raised
edge reminiscent of the banked
orners at racetracks. A crescent
segmented colour around
o-thirds of the face mimics
peedometer, and lights up in
dark. The 41mm stainless-
case contains an automatic
ment developed in-house by
s, and is covered front and
y domed sapphire crystals.
ial colourways are
e: sports grey, midnight
e and silver plate.
