Just take a look at this cracker. Matt Sheilds was in the Big
Chair for this issue, and Sir Alan Cathcart had just enjoyed
giving Triumph’s new Speed Triple a right-royal thrashing
its world launch.
The lead news story was the offi cial reveal of Ducati’s new
Diavel model. It was little more than a teaser by Ducati, wh
released just the single photograph of the new power cruis
a shot of its rear-end with heavy use of shadows to hide the
details. The bike was due to be revealed to the world in all i
high-horsepower beauty a week later at the EICMA show in
Milan. Mark Gardiner took us on a trip down memory lane,
along Route 66 in the annual Cannonball Run for pre-
motorcycles. Darryl Flack also told the story that never get
old, Micheal Doohan’s rough-and-tumble journey to becom

Round the traps
NewsJulia Gillard became Australia’s
first female Prime Minister, bringing joy to
females and gingers around the country.
Jessica Watson (pictured) did a brilliant job
of sailing solo around the world, even if NSW
Ports Minister Paul McLeay called her Jessica
Simpson in State Parliament. Too much
television perhaps, Minister?
Sport The Melbourne Storm was stripped
of two NRL premiership titles when it was
discovered they had knowingly breached the
salary cap. A French horse called Americain
fl ew into Australia and left with the 150th
Melbourne Cup stuff ed in its chaff bag. And
Australia’s bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup
was rejected – in favour of Qatar! How much
did our bid cost?

Era tech
3D televisions entered the marketplace, and the
ndustry thought we’d be queueing up to don glasses
h red and blue plastic lenses. Within a few years,
y household in the world would have a 3D
elevision and content producers would soon begin
filming its programs and covering sports using 3D
technology. But consumers didn’t buy in, and within
just a few years it was all but dead.

How much?
The average cost of a litre of petrol
in 2010 was $1.27, not much different
to what we are paying eight years later.
Unless, of course, you decide to fi ll up
on payday, before a long weekend,
during school holidays, or outside
the CBD, when the price suddenly
skyrockets. All coincidental, of course.
