SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE

The Tony Award–winning actor and writer, 55,
who directed Nicole Kidman in 2010’sRabbit Hole
and the upcomingHow to Talk to Girls at Parties,
will tour Australia for the first time with a new
show,The Origin of Love: The Songs & Stories of
Hedwig. The star ofHedwig and the Angry Inchtells
WHO’s Cynthia Wang about his musical inspirations.

The singers who remind me of my childhood
David Bowie was very powerful to me, and also
Barry Manilow. There was a kind of showbiz-y,
Broadway thing about him. I, of course, intuited
his queerness, which was quite obvious. He was
always a bit closeted but there
was a song called “All the Time”
that was very gay to me. He was
agreatcomforttomeasakid.
Live performance that
had a great impact
Patti Smith at a secret show in a
small bar in [New York’s] East
Village. I was dancing like crazy
and I turned around
during “Horses”
and realised
that no-one else in the whole
place was dancing. I turned
back around and she just sort
of braced her hand on my chest
like I was holding her up and
sang “Horses” right into my face.
She was like my buddy.
Go-to song as a DJ to kick off a party
I probably would start out with “High School
Dance” by The Sylvers. They were kind of a
Jackson 5 clone but they were actually really
good. They were a family also, and they had
their own Michael Jackson named Foster Sylvers,
who had a great song called “Misdemeanor”.
First album I ever bought
Elton John’s Captain
Fantastic. It has some
classic tunes like
“Someone Saved My
Life Tonight”, which
was based on him
about to marry a
woman!

THE VOICE ’s

FINAL^4

Armitage portrays
Big Bang Theory’s
resident know-it-
all, Sheldon
Cooper, as a tyke.

BELLA PAIGE
Coach Kelly called
her a ballad
queen. “While
she’s the youngest
in the final four,
Bella is also the
most experienced
in a competitive
arena having
done ‘Junior
Eurovision’
and ‘The Voice
Kids’.”

SHELDON
RILEY
Team George’s
creative
crooner “is
definitely the
boldest
character in the
Grand Finale,
but he also
has one of the
most powerful
voices in the
competition.”

SAM PERRY
The Perth loop
artist from
Team Kelly “is
without a doubt
the most
controversial
and unique
artist we’ve ever
had on ‘The
Voice,’ which
could either
work for or
against him!”

AYDAN
CALAFIORE
Team Joe’s
‘Young Talent
Time’ vet is a
“breakout pop-
star—he’s got
youth and
exuberance on
his side, and
he’s not afraid
to take physical
performance
risks.”

Kruger.

KID TALK FROM ...

The 9-year-old actor, who played
Ziggy Chapman in Big Little Lies,
tells WHO’s Deborah Grunfeld
about his series Young Sheldon
(Mondays at 7.30 PM on Nine).

Are you similar to Sheldon?
I am like him because we are
both passionate about the
things we like, but I am not
nearly as smart as he is. Also,

I think he finds it difficult to
understand people and I really
love being around people.
Did Big Bang Theory’s Jim
Parsons give you any advice?
Mr Jim was very helpful and he
is the world’s greatest Sheldon
expert. [His help] was great.
Are you good at bow ties?
I love wearing bow ties, but
I wear the ones that are pre-tied.
