You’d think that any character whose main

move is dropping bombs wouldn’t last that

long. Surely soon or later they’d drop one

too close and boom, go up in a ball of fire

and smoke. Yet the mighty Bomberman has

survived for decades and is one of gaming’s

oldest heroes. The first game came out all

the way back in 1983, and since then he has

starred in over 65 games. How crazy is that.

Despite that, Super Bomberman R is his first

game since 2010, so it’s been quite a little

holiday for the bomb king.

Thankfully, the wait has been worth it.

Bomberman sticks true to his roots in his new

game. The visuals are all nice and new, the

levels are bigger and better than ever, and the

controls perfectly modern. But the gameplay

remains very old school and that works really

well. The focus is on action, puzzles and quick

reflexes – oh, and multiplayer.

Bomberman is a level-based game. Each level

sees you looking from the top down on a maze

made up of blocks. Armed with your bombs,

you need to make your way through the maze,

avoiding all the bad guys and obstacles, as well

as collecting things. Sounds easy, right?

Obviously a huge part of the game is dropping

bombs as you go. This allows you to send

flames shooting through the maze, and you

have to be really smart about it. Flames can only

shoot down open paths, so you need to not only

time where you place them so they get passing

a Portal inspired

bomber.
