Princess Anne, 1973
Princess Anne worked closely
with designer Maureen Baker to
bring to life the vision she had for
her wedding to Captain Mark
Phillips. She looked demure and
serene when she walked down
the aisle at Westminster Abbey
in a high-necked Tudor-style
gown, embellished with seed
pearls and long medieval sleeves
that ballooned from her wrists
and trailed almost to the floor.
The pin-tucked bodice ensured
that, despite the full coverage,
the dress was flattering and
elegant. Princess Anne’s two-
metre satin train was augmented
by the fine tulle of her veil, which
was held in place by the striking
Queen Mary Fringe tiara. The
tiara was also worn by Princess
Elizabeth at her wedding.

Princess Margaret,
1960
The designer behind Princess
Elizabeth’s wedding gown was
called on again whenPrincess
Margaret announced her
engagement to society
photographer Antony Armstrong-
Jones. Utilising 30 metres of silk
organza in the skirt alone, Norman
Hartnell created a wedding dress
that was emblematic of Princess
Margaret’s chic style. The fitted
bodice and diaphanous silk skirt
had hardly any embellishment
at all. It was the grand, sparkling
Poltimore tiara, which held Princess
Margaret’s cascading veil to her
beehive hairdo, that truly made the
ensemble an icon of bridal style.
The tiara of diamonds, set in gold
and silver, can be converted into
a necklace and 11 brooches.AWW
