t was only itting that the sun shone brightly
upon a beaming Meghan Markle as she made
her way unattended up the aisle – a vision
in splendid white – to marry her prince.
That solo journey before she was met by her
soon-to-be father-in-law Prince Charles was a
short but symbolic one. Here was a modern,
independent woman taking on a role steeped in
history and embarking on a union that would
forever change the face of the British monarchy.
But as well as representing a new future,
this was a day that evoked memories of the
past. Memories of a little boy just 12 years
old forlornly following his mother’s casket
through the streets of London. As that now
strapping Prince stood in St George’s Chapel
overcome with emotion during his beloved
mum’s favourite hymn – a hymn that played
at her funeral at Westminster Abbey 20 years
ago – it was clear she would have been
bursting with pride and love for the young
man he had become and the bride he had
chosen. We enjoyed every moment covering
this historic occasion for our special issue,
we hope you will cherish it.
And what better edition of The Weekly
than this to launch our annual campaign
to ind, acknowledge and reward young
Australian women who, like Meghan, are
striving to bring positive change to the world.
The Australian Women’s Weekly AGL Women
of the Future awards are now open, so if you
or someone you know is doing extraordinary
things in the ields of Charity and Community,
Business and Entrepreneur or Innovation and
Technology, then turn to page 88 for details
on what it takes to be awarded one of our
three life-changing scholarships.
The redemptive power of love is at the
heart of our interview with disgraced Aussie
cricket star David Warner’s wife, Candice. She
talks candidly about their dark days following
the ball tampering scandal and how adversity
only brought them closer. Which is one sign
of true love our royal newlyweds – who faced
their fair share of challenges in the lead-up to
their big day – could surely attest to.
