Sunrise over the Black River Gorges
National Park, viewed from the Black
River Gorges Lookout Point, reveals the
colours — and scale — of the forested
reserve. Covering 5% of the island nation,
it’s a popular destination for hikers and
birdwatchers, who come to glimpse the
elusive pink pigeon, Mauritius kestrel and
echo parakeet. Travellers can flit between
rainforest and reef on the south-western
tip of the island, where the park meets the
waters of the Le Morne peninsula. Here,
local fishing boats head out into the Indian
Ocean — a sight little changed since
Darwin’s Beagle dropped anchor here.
