Memory lane
I was delighted to read about Bristol in
National Geographic Traveller (March 2022 ).
The pandemic separated me from the city
and this was a lovely reminder, bringing back
many fond memories of living, holidaying and
working there. I grew up in nearby Newport
and always looked up to Bristol, which felt
like a more ‘person-sized’ London. I worked in
Corn Street for two years and loved the area,
with its second-hand stores and St Nicholas
Market. I never noticed the alternative hand
showing Bristol Mean Time on the Corn
Exchange, though, but will look out for it next
time I’m there. The very idea of it is so Bristol,
with its counterculture and own currency,
the Bristol pound. I can’t wait to get back and
revisit the Banksy-bedecked streets and enjoy
a pint (or three) of cider. MARK LEWIS
Lightweight, waterproof
and made from recycled
materials, this new 14L
backpack is a versatile
choice. There’s a G-clip for
quick access, compartments
for essentials, including a
13-inch laptop section, and
it also comes in a range of
colours. It’s particularly
good for cyclists, too,
with a cushioned back and
ergonomically designed
straps. stubbleandco.com

Bolt from the blue
It was a real balm to see those brilliant blues
of Menorca (Weekender, May 2 022)! I have
lots of teenage memories of spending two hot,
laid-back weeks in a villa there in the 1 970s,
as mass tourism was really starting to take off
in the Med. So, it was encouraging to read that
the island remains so relaxed and quiet after
all these years. I’m looking forward to heading
there later this year, so thanks for the tips.

Time for change?
Reading your Travelling with Pride article
(April 2021) really hit home, bringing back
the many awkward encounters at check-in
during a trip to Sri Lanka with my partner.
The country is stunning and one of the
most rewarding holidays we’ve been on, but
members of the LGBTQ+ community aren’t
always accepted. I fully agree that by not
discounting countries whose laws exclude our
community, we can potentially bring about
slow change and enjoy wonderful cultures in
the process. While this is a change that needs
to happen at government level, maybe the
image of a same-sex couple walking around
may have a positive eff ect on those around us.
We really are no diff erent after all.
