BUILD YOUR OWN LOG

RAFT FOR A MULTI-DAY

BACKWATERS TRIP

There’s no finer way to give civilisation the slip
than by building your own log raft from scratch
and floating downstream, past sandbanks and
forests. Harking back to a more primitive age,
these multi-day tours take to the Klarälven river,
which flows through Värmland in the heart of
Sweden. Time melts away. The summer light is
ever changing. Days are spent fishing or spotting
wildlife, including beavers, moose and deer. Nights
are spent by warming campfires and gazing up to
skies pinpricked with stars. Tours range from one
night to a week from June to August.

GLAMP IN SHELTERS

BELOW STARRY NIGHT

SKIES IN BRORFELDE

It’s only an hour west of Copenhagen, but when
gazing up at the sky on a night so silent you can
hear your own heartbeat, The Observatory, in
the village of Brorfelde, seems far, far away. This
is a place of unexpected wilderness where the
darkness touches deep. Join the pros to identify
constellations and distant planets at Denmark’s
biggest observatory, then indulge in a little
pre-bedtime stargazing from one of the slickly
designed new shelters. observatoriet.dk

CLIMB PULPIT ROCK AT

DAYBREAK

It’s the huge fist of rock that everyone wants to
climb. But set off at sunrise to Preikestolen
(‘pulpit rock’), and you’ll beat most people to it.
At this golden hour, it’s as though the Nordic
gods themselves are beaming down on the
1,982ft-high rock. Best hiked from April to October,
the two-hour, 2 .5-mile trek to the top wriggles
up through woods and along a boulder-dotted
trail built by Nepalese Sherpas. It’s easy to navigate,
but slippery after rain. The rock lives up to all
the Instagram hype, nose-diving to the sapphire
expanse of Lysefjord. For a crack-of-dawn start,
glamp by the fjord’s edge. lysefjordenadventure.no
